Sammanfattning

The construction and real estate sector accounts for a significant share och society´s climate impact and resource consumption, which has increased the interest in circular economy and the reuse och building materials. The reuse of prefabricated concrete elements has been identified as an important strategy to reduce the need for new production a thereby decrease the climate impact of the construction sector. At the same time, there is a lack of clear work processes and standardized methods for how the reuse of load-bearing concrete elements should be carried out in practice. The aim of this study is to analyse the structural engineer´s role in the reuse process, with a focus on responsibilities, work tasks and critical points related on the reuse of prefabricated concrete elements. The study was conducted as a literature review. Based om the collected information, a flowchart and a process description were also developed to illustrate the structural engineer’s workflow in the reuse process. The results show that the structural engineer has a central role in the reuse process by assessing documentation, conduction condition assessments and analysing the technical properties and remaining service life of the concrete elements. The study also shows that clearer standards and guidelines are required to enable safe and efficient reuse within the construction sector. The flowchart and process description clarified the structural engineer´s workflow, as well as the different decision points and chases that need to be managed during the reuse process of prefabricated concrete elements.
