Läsförståelse genom bilderböcker : Bilderbokens potential att utveckla äldre elevers förmåga att tolka och göra inferenser

The purpose of this study is to investigate the didactic potential of using picture books with young adult students. Furthermore, the purpose is to see how teachers view said potential. The research questions are “What possibilities do picture books contribute for working with inferences?” “How do teachers view the potential of picture books for the purpose of working with inferences?” and “How does the potential of picture books to develop reading comprehension align with teachers' perceptions?”. The study consists of two parts: a literary analysis of the picture book Ingenting är omöjligt för oss (2021) and an empirical study with teachers. The picture book analysis is conducted using Maria Nikolajeva’s theories on picture books and the empirical study consists of a focus group interview. The main results are that Ingenting är omöjligt för oss contains “gaps” that require the reader to make inferences. This is supported by both the literary analysis and the focus group study. Therefore, the conclusion of the study is that picture books offer opportunities for working with inferences.
