Leadership and Organization in the Construction Sector - Construction Company: A Familiar Enviroment or Just a Workplace?

This thesis examines leadership and organization in the construction industry, focusing on howthese aspects affect the work environment and employee well-being, as well as their contributionto project success. The study highlights the importance of specific leadership qualities andcompetencies, fostering a sense of community and support within the company, and creating abalanced work environment that benefits employee performance and well-being. An effective leader in the construction sector must be able to adapt their leadership based on thesituation and the needs of the employees, requiring flexibility and a combination of differentleadership styles. The study identifies several key factors for successful leadership in theconstruction sector. Adaptability is one of the most important competencies for a leader whoshould be able to switch between different leadership styles and adjust their leadership accordingto the situation. Promoting social cohesion through joint activities and an open communicationculture is essential for creating a sense of community and support among employees. Balancingdemands and support in the work environment is also important, as a work environment thatbalances work demands with sufficient support and opportunities for autonomy enhancesemployee well-being and performance. Regular feedback and clear communication helpemployees feel informed, valued, and motivated. The method for the study included both theoretical and empirical investigations. Literaturereviews were combined with surveys and interviews to gather data on the role of leadership inthe construction sector. The survey was sent to 18 different construction companies, with 14respondents participating, providing a broad insight into how leadership is practiced in variouscompanies. Interviews were conducted with both leaders and employees to gain a deeperunderstanding of their experiences and perspectives. The study also provides recommendationsfor how leaders in the construction sector can adapt their leadership styles to effectively driveprojects to success. In summary, the results show that effective leadership in the construction sector requires acombination of specific qualities and competencies, the ability to foster community and support,and the creation of a work environment that enables optimal performance. By linking theoreticalmodels to empirical observations, several key factors contributing to successful leadership and apositive work environment in the construction sector have been identified. This researchcontributes to an increased understanding of the role of leadership in the construction industryand its impact on both project success and the work environment.
