This thesis examines the potential of leveraging AI to prevent and address gender-based violence (GBV) within humanitarian conflict settings. It identifies critical gaps in current GBV prevention and response mechanisms, including data bias, privacy concerns, cultural and linguistic exclusion, and the ethical implications of technology use in fragile contexts. Drawing from feminist theory, humanitarian ethics, and technology innovation frameworks, the research explores opportunities, challenges, and ethical considerations for integrating AI in humanitarian practice. Findings reveal that AI-driven solutions can enhance situational awareness, survivor support, and accountability when ethically designed. However, these innovations must contend with challenges such as algorithm bias, power asymmetries, and the risk of harm through data misuse. The study proposes an innovative ethical merge of AI logic with humanitarian organisation logic, emphasizing that successful AI adoption in GBV response requires a principled, context-sensitive approach that centers the voices and agency of affected populations. By bridging humanitarian principles with responsible innovation, this work contributes to the growing discourse on technology’s role in safeguarding vulnerable populations in complex areas.
