Lifting the Veil on Swedish Cenocoeliinae : Integrative Taxonomy of Cenocoeliinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)

Cenocoeliinae is a small subfamily within Braconidae (Hymenoptera). In Sweden there are three described species: Cenocoelius analis (Nees 1834), Cenocoelius aartseni (Achterberg1994) and Lestricus secalis (Linnaeus 1758), with little Swedish occurrence data and nomodern records for two of the species (L. secalis and C. aartseni). In this study 42 specimenswere morphologically examined, and mitochondrial gene COI barcode sequences wereattempted for all 42 specimens but successfully produced for 12 of these. These werecombined with five previously sequenced specimens to produce a final molecular dataset of17 sequences which were compared with reference sequences from the database Barcode ofLife Data System (BOLD) to assess congruence between morphological and molecularspecies classification. Morphological examination identified five of the 42 specimens as L.secalis and the remaining 37 specimens as C. analis. All L. secalis and C. analis sequencesclustered with their respective BOLD reference sequences. A third cluster containing a C.aartseni sequence from the Netherlands and an unidentified Cenocoeliinae sequence fromFrance was downloaded from BOLD but none of the material from this study fell within thiscluster. Only two of the Swedish species were found in this study and the absence of the third,C. aartseni in this study and occurrence databases raises questions about its presence inSweden. Further targeted sampling is needed to provide a verified record of this species inSweden. This study contributes new occurrence data for Swedish Cenocoeliinae anddemonstrates the value of combining morphology and COI barcoding.
