Sammanfattning

Material Death is my Master project that investigates how materials arelabeled as “finished” and pushed into the waste category. Instead ofseeing waste as a moral failing or dead matter, the project viewsdiscarded materials as matter that persist, change, and continue to servebeyond our limited ideas of usefulness. By weaving with discardedmaterials while using hemp as the warp, the work makes the waste crisisphysical and tangible. It also avoids the urge to redeem or judge thematerials themselves. Using ideas from deconstruction and newmaterialist thinking, the study presents “waste” as a social andsystematic choice that creates hierarchies of value, labor, and visibility. The project suggests that craft can act as maintenance; it slows down, reveals material relationships, and encourages care and responsibilitywithout claiming to “solve” the problem. If we shift focus, can we create better relations and bring more care intothe system? And how can we respect materials from start to end? Thewhole chain, the whole process is important. I think that starting with anunderstanding of what the construction of waste makes us believe, canmake us value our resources.
