Sammanfattning

This study examines migrants’ definitions and feelings of belonging and focuses on how this feeling is shaped in Sweden through everyday experiences and social relationships. Through qualitative semi-structured interviews with seven migrants residing in Sweden, the study has been able to answer its purpose. The analysis is based on Song’s (2014) theory of racialization, as well as theories of social exclusion according to Pettersson and Davidsson (2016) and Goffman’s dramaturgical theory (2020). The study identifies that feelings of community are shaped through relationships, work, language, and everyday interactions. However, several participants describe their own experiences of exclusion and discrimination, which create obstacles to achieving a sense of community and participation. The study emphasizes how individual it is to feel a sense of belonging to a foreign country and also highlights how social processes develop in interactions between people, as well as how complex the concept is.
