Mothers, Monsters, and the State : Gendered Construction of Securitisation

Traditional gender roles result in women who are members of transnational criminalorganisations (TCO) and commit crimes often not being perceived as a security threat. Toclassify them as a security threat, they must either be de-securitised or have their femininitydenied. Furthermore, the study examines how national and international documents framewomen differently. To address the problem, this study seeks to understand how convictedwomen’s framing affects the perception of them as a security threat. To address the relevance,a discourse analysis is applied using the theoretical framework of feminist securitisation theory.The findings indicate that the portrayal of women is often associated with stereotypical gendernarratives and that there is a significant difference between national and international framingof female members of transnational criminal organisations.
