Negotiations Of Identities in The Diaspora : Circassian Narratives in Syria and Sweden: An AutoethnographicCase Study

This study examines how identity in the diaspora adapts and is continually negotiated across multiple life contexts, focusing on the experiences of Circassians born in Syria who later migrated to Sweden. The research explores the impact of authoritarianism, war, and migration on the negotiations of identity. Using six narrative interviews with myself and my family members, employing autoethnography and oral history as methods of data collection, the study analyses how Circassian identities are experienced and negotiated. Drawing on the concepts of diaspora and belonging, the findings reveal that Circassian identities are rarely static; they are dynamic and continually renegotiated in response to personal, social, and political circumstances.
