Sammanfattning

Sensitive information can still be exposed on the lock screen via notifications despite security mechanisms such as Face ID or passwords. The aim of this study is to quantify and analyze this information leakage and to provide recommendations to minimize unwanted exposure of data. Through an experimental method, manual extraction of notifications is performed using different notification settings on two mobile models (iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy A20e). A scoring model is applied to quantify the observations. The results show that settings affect the exposure of information, but no setting eliminates the leakage completely, as metadata remains. Moreover, the results indicate that the system design of different applications has a significant impact on information leakage regardless of the notification settings used. System-specific prioritization features and the type of data transmitted also affect the amount and type of exposed information. The study contributes insights of value for both forensic investigators, who can utilize the lock screen as a valuable source of information, and for individuals whose privacy is at risk.
