Sammanfattning

Background: Substance use disorder is a significant public health concern associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and recurrent healthcare utilization. Individuals living with the condition often have complex healthcare needs and encounter healthcare services across multiple settings. In these encounters, the approach of healthcare professionals constitutes a central aspect of nursing care and may influence patients’ experiences of safety, dignity, and participation. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe and synthesize how patients with substance use disorder experience the approach of healthcare professionals. Method: The study was conducted as a descriptive literature review with a qualitative approach based on ten peer-reviewed original articles published between 2021 and 2025. Main results: The findings showed that the approach was experienced as either dignifying or demeaning. An empathetic, respectful, and participatory approach contributed to patients feeling seen as individuals, which strengthened trust and motivation to remain in care. In contrast, an approach characterized by mistrust, stigmatization, and minimization of needs led to feelings of shame, powerlessness, and distance from healthcare. Conclusion: The approach of healthcare professionals appears to be a fundamental aspect of nursing care with significant implications for patients’ trust, participation, and engagement in treatment. A person-centred, empathetic, and non-judgmental approach is essential to promote safe and equitable care for patients with substance use disorder.
