Wireless communications have proved to be a massive investment in the modern-day technology, enabling us to transmit data without any physical connections. With the continuous evolution of networks, the need for a more reliable communication has never been higher, particularly in Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) within 5G networks, leaving a very minimal room for error. In this thesis we analyze the challenges of ensuring high reliability and low latency in Short Packet Communications (SPC) by using MIMO transmissions. Our work is centered around the implementation of MIMO transmission at the transmitter, receiver and relay. Specifically, we implement Transmit Antenna Selection (TAS) at the transmitter and Selection Combining (SC) at the receiver with the relay acting as an intermediate node. We implement two relaying protocols at the relay Amplify-and-Forward (AF) and Decode-and-Forward (DF), to derive expressions for the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at the receiver for both protocols under Nagakami-m fading conditions. Further, the calculations of the Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF) and Probability Density Function (PDF) aid us with our analysis of the systems performance in terms of the Outage Probability, Block Error Rate (BLER) and achievable data rate. These metrics help us understand the delicate balance between reliability and latency in the applications of URLLC. We use MATLAB simulations to validate our theoretical findings and results to demonstrate that the implementation of relay systems could be highly beneficial in improving the reliability of communication without compromising latency, making our approach a highly effective solution for URLLC.
