PUBLIC OPINION OF LIGHTING IN SLOTTSSKOGEN AND SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE CHANGES

Light pollution and artificial light at night (ALAN) are ever-increasing problems worldwide that have to be addressed for the sake of human health, biodiversity, and the environment. Still, there are currently no regulatory frameworks set that specifically address light pollution, meaning that it is mainly up to the local actors and authorities to act. Many municipalities are starting to implement sustainable lighting changes that have lower overall light levels. However, as the public knowledge of light pollution is generally low, there is a risk that the changes might be met with criticism from the public. Informing about the potential benefits of lowered lighting and gathering knowledge of the public's preferences is therefore an important factor for implementations to be fully successful. This study investigates visitors' opinions and perceptions of lighting in Slottsskogen and also potential changes that can be implemented. In total, 64 responses were recorded through an online survey as well as in person interviews. The results indicate that the most preferred measures to implement are changes in light color temperature and brightness. The feasibility of implementing such operational adjustments is also supported by the current state of lighting fixtures in Slottsskogen. Responses also revealed a clear need for lighting to provide a sense of safety in Slottsskogen. Implemented changes could avoid compromising this by enabling more human activity at certain paths. Benefits to animal welfare and energy waste are also of high interest, and these topics should be highlighted when informing the public about light pollution. This study provides exploratory insight into how public preferences could be integrated with lighting changes and public information to reduce light pollution.
