Rainforest Protectors – Conservation & Education Centre: Sustainable Development in Sinharaja, Sri Lanka

This thesis explores how a sustainable future for the Sinharaja forest reserve might be achieved. Sinharaja is the largest remaining tract of ancient rainforest in Sri Lanka, home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, the majority of which are endemic. While conservation efforts initiated by the Sri Lankan government provide a promising framework for protecting this unique landscape, challenges remain. These include the economic dependence on tourism, limited livelihood options for local communities, land-use restrictions, and increasing commercial interests—all of which pose a persistent threat to the future of this sensitive ecosystem. The research begins with case studies of ecotourism projects near Sinharaja that claim to follow sustainable practices. These are followed by interviews with key stakeholders. One such stakeholder is the non-governmental organization Rainforest Protectors Trust (RPT), which plays a critical role in conservation through education, research, and on-the-ground ranger efforts. The thesis concludes with a design proposal, developed in collaboration with RPT, which aims to strengthen their presence in the region. The project explores how architectural intervention can support long-term ecological stewardship and promote coexistence between the forest and its surrounding communities.
