Sammanfattning

Wireless sensor networks are increasingly used across various industries to measure environmental conditions including but not limited to temperature, humidity, pollution metrics and so on. MiraMesh networks are a type of 2D self-organizing, self-healing mesh network. As these networks continue to grow in popularity and take on more and more critical roles across industries, there is a significant need to implement fault tolerance mechanisms, ensuring reliability and availability of services. Wireless sensor networks like MiraMesh consist of several sensor nodes coupled with a single gateway node. If the gateway node disconnects, the MiraMesh network collapses with each node disconnecting from the other. Once the gateway node returns, it takes a considerable amount of time to rebuild the network. This can adversely impact systems dependent on the network. This thesis proposes a centralized fault detection system named the Root Status Check (RSC) module that can identify when the gateway node disconnects and maintain the network while the gateway node is unavailable. Results are evaluated based on Mean Time To Recovery (MTTR) of MiraMesh networks of various numbers of nodes. The conclusions drawn prove that the solution produced as a result of this research significantly reduces the MTTR of such networks on disconnection of the gateway node.
