Background Individuals with dementia have an increased risk of experiencing pain. Pain may contribute to the development of Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD). Aim The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between BPSD and pain, as well as to examine potential gender differences. Method The study was conducted as a quantitative cross-sectional and registry-based study using data and variables from the BPSD-registry. A total of 148 individuals from two residential care facilities were included. Main Results Registered pain was observed in 73% of the participants. However, the majority of individuals lacked pain assessment using pain assessment tools. This indicates deficiencies in systematic pain assessment. This finding confirms what previous research shows, that pain is often difficult to detect and untreated in individuals with dementia. The results also show how behavioral changes can be signs of pain in individuals who lack verbal communication. Hence, the importance of a structured assessment with pain assessment tools, increased competence in pain assessment, as well as the significance of an interdisciplinary approach, is emphasized. Conclusion The result shows that there is no significant relationship between BPSD symptoms and pain. There is also no significance regarding pain complaints between the sexes. The result also shows that three out of four participants suffer from pain but lack analgesics.
