Background: Palliative care is provided when illnesses is no longer curable, the aim is to relieve the patient from pain and suffering and strengthen the wellbeing. Previous research shows that communication is an important part of the nurse’s nursing work, and once it fails also trust and feeling safe fails in both the patient and relatives. The nurse has a big responsibility to care for every single patient uniquely along with their wishes and needs. Aim: To describe nurses’ experiences of palliative care at the end of life. Method: A general literature review where nine qualitative articles was analysed and two quantitative articles was analysed. Results: The result could be divided in four themes: Communication, the core of palliative care, A custom-made nursing, To care with empaty and sympathy and Readiness to handle dying and death. Conclusion: Palliative care is a type of care with a lot of complexity therefore it’s importat that the nurse feels safe and confident to talk about death and dying and to meet the demenads that is set by the patient and relatives. The result showed that nurse’s isn’t feeling completley comfortable with their workrole and that it requires more education to change this.
