Background Emergency care involves immediate and time-critical assessment and treatment of patients with acute conditions, characterized by a fast-paced environment, rapid decision-making, and continuous prioritization. Person-centered care is essential in emergency settings, and an empathetic approach by nurses can enhance patients’ sense of security and participation. However, nurses’ work environments are often affected by high workload and stress, which may challenge their ability to maintain high-quality care. Aim The aim of this literature review was to explore nurses’ experiences of providing person-centered care in emergency settings. Method This is a literature review with elements of the methodology used in systematic reviews. The databases CINAHL and PubMed were used, with limitations to articles published in the last five years and in English. A total of 15 articles were reviewed and synthesized to address the aim and research question. Results The literature review resulted in three main categories: Work environment, Resources in care, and Nurses’ attitudes. These main categories were further divided into six subcategories: Experiences of time constraints, Experiences of high demands, Relatives, Communication and teamwork, Perspective, and Nurses’ emotional foundation. Conclusions The findings of the literature review highlight that nurses experience a strong need to provide person-centered care, while time pressure and workload in emergency care create challenges in delivering fully adequate person-centered care. Communication and teamwork positively influence person-centered care, while empathy is perceived as a prerequisite and an opportunity for achieving it.
