Sammanfattning

Residential segregation is one of the reasons why individuals suffer from unequal opportunities to succeed in life. Factors, such as education, income and health are affected by the spatial separation of groups. Residential segregation occurs throughout the city yet the focus often falls on socioeconomically disadvantaged neighbourhoods. These neighbourhoods are portrayed in an unfavorable light and tend to be stigmatized. A well-established approach for policymakers to address these inequalities is through tenure mix policies, with the aim of creating more diverse neighborhoods. There are expectations that offering a wider range of tenure options will encourage affluent households to stay and raise the neighbourhood’s status. Simultaneously, previous research shows that increased resources lead to desirable groups leaving, known as the happiness paradox. This acknowledges how well tenure mix strategies actually work, highlighting the need for more knowledge about moving intentions in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighbourhoods. This bachelor’s thesis examines tenants’ intentions to move and their interest in changing tenancy type within their residential area, as a part of climbing the housing ladder, focusing on the dimensions of place attachment and perceptions of negative reputation. This quantitative survey examines tenants’ attitudes and preferences in Biskopsgården and Tynnered, Gothenburg. The results show that it is primarily place attachment that influences moving intentions and the desire to climb the housing ladder in one’s neighbourhood. The perception of a negative reputation does not have the same impact. Families with children and people aged 18-35 are the groups most likely to consider moving. These same groups also show the greatest interest in climbing the housing ladder in their neighbourhood. Thus, this study highlights that policymakers need to focus on families and young adults, as well as work on initiatives to strengthen tenants’ place attachment, in the hope of encouraging more people to stay and strengthening the neighbourhood.
