ABSTRACT Background: ICU handover takes place in a high-risk environment characterized bycomplexity, time pressure, and dense information. Communication failures may leadto information loss and affect continuity of care. Structured handover tools such asSBAR/ISBAR aim to standardize the content and sequence of information transfer. Aim: To describe how intensive care nurses experience the use of structuredcommunication according to SBAR/ISBAR during patient handover, in intensive careunits. Method: An integrative literature review was conducted. The search strategy wasguided by the SPIDER framework and performed in PubMed and CINAHL. Studyselection followed predefined eligibility criteria with screening at title/abstract andfull-text levels. Methodological quality was appraised using Joanna Briggs Institutecritical appraisal tools tailored to study design. Data were extracted into a matrix andsynthesized using an integrative approach. Results: Eight original studies were included. Nurses described that SBAR/ISBAR canenhance structure, clarity, and predictability of handover; however, perceivedusefulness depended on context, adherence, and implementation support. The findingsalso highlighted the need for ICU-specific content, explicit plans andrecommendations, and ongoing training. Conclusion: SBAR/ISBAR may strengthen the structure and clarity of ICU handover, but sustainable use requires adaptation to ICU needs, ongoing training, and asupportive communication culture.
