Student Perceptions of Achieving Intended Learning Outcomes with Generative AI: A Study in Swedish Higher Education Using Qualitative Methods

This qualitative study investigates the effect that Generative AI (GenAI) tools have on students' achievement of Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) in higher education institutions (HEIs), focusing on perceptions and utilizing the Structure of the Observed Learning Outcome (SOLO) Taxonomy. Conducting several semi-structured interviews, the study investigates the role of GenAI in potentially improving academic efficiency, accessibility and critical thinking. Conversely, the research investigates its potential of hindering achieving higher level learning outcomes because of concerns regarding over-reliance, ethical use and limitations with GenAI. The findings from the empirical research reveals that students view GenAI tools as useful for low level ILOs tasks, such as summarizing, brainstorming and language refinement but less effective when it comes to higher level outcomes that require a deeper understanding. An emphasis is placed on the need for clear institutional policies and guidelines which highlights the significance of responsible use of GenAI to complement the learning process. The study additionally discusses the potential of a balanced human-AI hybrid integration that may foster critical thinking while warning against potential disruptions in the learning process if GenAI replaces crucial learning developments. The study concludes by emphasizing responsible GenAI integration in HEIs, highlighting discipline specific policies and balanced use.
