Sammanfattning
Providing ancillary services to the power system creates a connection between environmental services and business development through market integration. Using the flexibility of building for this purpose open up new market possibility, however it is a relatively unexplored area. This Thesis aims to contribute to knowledge about market integration by the delivery of ancillary services to the power system and thus fill the knowledge gap in existing literature within the field of business research and more specific technical business development and entrepreneurship. This is done by investigating the electrical flexibility and thus the potential of commercial buildings to enter the ancillary market. The study deals with different aspects and alternative ways that profitability can be measured in relation to healthy business development. To answer the research questions an initial qualitative interview study was performed to map out technical requirements that are placed on real estate installations in order to deliver ancillary services. To perform the interview study a new approach was applied and evaluated, creating a methodological contribution to the study. Further on the technology with the most flexible potential was studied into more detail and in relation to the qualification requirements of the type of ancillary service that was considered most appropriate to connect to. In addition to that, a micro-ethnographically inspired study was carried out which means that the attitude and conditions towards climate issues and environmental services are taken into account. This was done with the aim of studying the view within the organization in an attempt to study non- monetary values of a green investment, as an alternative to economic ones. The result of the study shows that it is technically possible to deliver ancillary services with the ventilations system and that the most profitable markets are FCR-N and FCR-D. Furthermore, it shows that it is a profitable investment with low investment costs that has a short payback time. In summary, the study shows good opportunities for commercial real estate companies to participate in this type of market integration and that the green investment does not only create environmental value, but also contributes to a parallel financial value to the organization. This means that the market integrations could help create good business development opportunities for real estate in Sweden. Thereby, the study contributes to filling knowledge gaps in the interdisciplinary research area within energy flexibility in buildings and technology-based entrepreneurship.
