The Patriarchal System of Power and Masculinity in Toni Morrison’s Beloved: A Feminist Approach to Interpreting Halle

This essay studies Halle in Toni Morrison’s Beloved as a male character who demonstrates how masculinity can be developed from the perspectives of caring, relational responsibilities, and vulnerability rather than dominance. Previous research has predominantly centered around the female character of Sethe, motherhood, trauma, and memory; however, this research suggests that Halle provides valuable insight into the gendered effects of slavery. bell hooks’ feminist critique of patriarchy and R.W. Connell’s theory of hegemonic masculinity are used to analyze Halle's economic sacrifice, his unconditional and non-possessive love for Sethe, and his psychological collapse subsequent to witnessing Sethe violated. Close reading is utilized throughout this essay to argue that Morrison portrays Halle as a character whose actions directly oppose the patriarchal ideals of masculinity while also illustrating how violently slavery restricts and destroys alternative masculine identities. Therefore, this research contributes to feminist readings of Beloved by demonstrating that just like femininity; masculinity is formed and fractured by racialized and patriarchal forms of power.
