Sammanfattning

Distemper is a matte paint that presents significant preservation challenges, particularly chalking and friability, which often necessitate consolidation treatment. However, many consolidants increase gloss, darken the paint layer, or fail to eliminate chalking entirely. In addition, there is a lack of studies focusing specifically on distemper on canvas. This thesis examines Jin Shofu as a consolidant for chalking distemper on canvas with the use of mock-ups, evaluating gloss, lightness and cohesion. Measuring was done using glossomere, colometer and tape tests. Five concentrations between 0.5%- 2.5% were tested, using both water and sole carrier and water with ethanol, and applied in one, two and three applications. The impact on gloss was 0,1 GU in almost all samples. The impact on lightness was low, and for several samples imperceptible. The cohesion was greatly improved and left no chalking. The best performing samples were the 0.5% with ethanol and 1% with ethanol had the lowest impact on lightness, whilst also detaching very little during the tape test. The 1.5% with ethanol in three applications had a slightly higher visual impact, but resulted in a stronger cohesion and adhesion.
