The Succeeding Act - Enhancing Artistic Performances through Immersive Technologies

Extended Reality (XR) devices have recently been transforming a wide range of industries, driven by their capacity to support an ample variety of complex and innovative interactions in dedicated applications. There is, however, one industry sector that has yet to explore the uses of this technology to its full potential, even though its naturally exploratory and experimental nature, may fit perfectly with the current advancements of these devices: the Arts & Cultural Sector. In this research, we explore the possibilities of bringing Mixed Reality (MR) technology into the realm of Artistic Performances and whether it can be used as a valuable tool in helping professionals plan, create, rehearse and present their very own Immersive Performances to a live audience. The study results are achieved through a Qualitative Research following the Research through Design (RtD) methodology. We first perform a pre-study on this topic, which starts by consulting professional experts with different artistic backgrounds which allows us to acquire their knowledge and ideas on the subject. These insights are then used as a basis for creating software-based prototypes, and finally we have them tested by participants possessing relevant backgrounds in our researched field (e.g. actors, choreographers, etc.), in workshops organised by the researcher.
