Sammanfattning

Trust is a prerequisite for a well-functioning society and can be understood through various dimensions, for example, social trust, institutional trust, and trust in technology. A recent technological innovation, artificial intelligence (AI), has gained popularity in recent years, and one aspect of this innovation is generative AI-chatbots, such as ChatGPT. These chatbots have made their way into academic contexts, and this study investigates students' attitudes toward these tools, with the aim of understanding how different dimensions of trust influence their perceptions. Previous research suggests that students generally have a positive attitude toward chatbots, primarily due to their user-friendliness and the belief that they can support improved academic results. However, this study, based on quantitative research using regression analyses of survey responses from students, indicates that students' attitudes are more accurately described as neutral. The results show a correlation between trust in generative AI-chatbots and students' attitudes toward them. However, no such correlation was found between institutional trust and students’ attitudes toward generative AI-chatbots. Thus, this study contributes a trust-based perspective to the field, offering insights that may be of interest for future research.
