This study examined the effects of various regeneration and soil scarification methods, as well as fencing, on Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) regeneration in southern Sweden. A total of 3,097 trees across 320 sample plots were measured, comparing natural regeneration, direct seeding, and planting within and without fence. Sometime during the 13-year experiment sections of the fence broke down, giving ungulates access inside. Multiple stems inside showed signs of browsing damage. This may have affected the result of fencing negatively. The results showed both regeneration and fence had statistically significant effect on height p=<0.001 and diameter p=<0.001. Planted pine achieved 80-149% better growth with fence for the height and diameter growth compared to natural regeneration and direct seeding. And 89%-118% without fence. The post hoc analysis showed that planted seedlings had significant different growth compared to sowing and natural regeneration.Soilpreparation had a significant effect on height p=<0.001 and diameter p=<0.001.Fence had a statistically significant increase in height p=0.044 but not in diameter p=0.954. Harrowing resulted in greater growth than mounding with fence. Without fence the methods had similar growth.Planted pine on harrowed soil with fence had the highest growth, while browsing damage were higher in areas without fencing.
