This thesis in mechanical engineering, conducted in collaboration with Kalmar Solutions AB,addresses the development of a mechanical fail-safe locking system for cab tilting in mediumsized diesel forklifts. The motivation for the study is that the current manual solution, consistingof a separate support bar, presents limitations in terms of safety, ergonomics, and usability. The aim of this work is to develop an integrated locking system that automatically secures thecab in both partially and fully tilted positions, regardless of whether a cassette is used or not.The study is based on a systematic mechanical design process, including needs analysis, requirement specification, market analysis, product specification, and concept generation inaccordance with relevant ISO standards, as well as mechanical and analytical calculations andsimulations.Through moment equilibrium and center of gravity calculations, the critical load wasdetermined as 𝐹 = −42117,4 𝑁 in the fully tilted position with cassette, including a safetyfactor. The results of the market analysis indicate that existing solutions are often manual orpartially integrated, and therefore insufficient from a safety perspective, while self-lockingmechanical systems offer higher safety and functionality. The final concept was developed by combining a spring-loaded locking mechanism withmechanical knee joint system, fulfilling requirements for self-locking capability, safety, andintegration without extensive redesign of the machine. The study demonstrates that amechanical automated locking system can improve safety, reduce the risk of human error, andincrease efficiency during service operations.
