This study investigates how generative artificial intelligence reproduces historical narratives in comparison to educational literature intended for upper secondary education in Sweden. The study examines which themes, perspectives and agents are prioritized when AI explains history and how this relates to already established educational materials. The Swedish democratization process, the Second World War and the fall of the Soviet Union are the three historical contexts that this study focuses on. The theoretical framework is grounded in Hayden White´s theory of historical narrative. The study concludes that ChatGPT reinforces the narratives that are already present in the educational materials but with a weakness when it comes to describe the influence of different individuals in different events of history. Dominant political actors and institutional perspectives are being prioritized while the woman´s presence is overlooked. The study describes that ChatGPT can function as a supportive tool to use in history education but highlights the need for critical reflection while using it.
