Sammanfattning

The increase in use of digital tools and methods within digital humanities and cultural heritage has raised concerns around the importance of critical engagement, especially regarding the decision-making behind processes like 3D visualizations of tangible cultural heritage. This study explores the need for documentation of digital tools and methods, the possibilities for virtual reunification via virtual visualization, and the practical realities of cultural heritage professionals within the digitization field. Two methods were employed in order to gain holistic insight into the subject. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted, gaining insight into professional perspectives and practical realities when working with Linked Open Data and virtual visualizations. A case study was also done, where a 3D visualization was created, and a virtual reunification process was performed. These two methods were compared and contrasted in order to gain deeper and more contextualized knowledge into the field. The analysis revealed complex dynamics between data, metadata and paradata, friction between practice and policy, and a lack of understanding into the overarching field of digitization tools when employed in institutional contexts. The findings reveal a strong need for communication and collaboration between stakeholders, users, and end users, as well as a need for critical assessment and documentation to promote understanding of the decision-making process.
