Wave Energy in Sweden: Barriers and Future Possibilities

Sammanfattning
Today's increased need for sustainable energy systems and the growing demand for renewable electricity production in connection with the global energy transition is the motivation and background for this study. The goal of the study is to investigate the institutional, technical and economic factors affecting the development of wave energy in order to gain a deeper understanding of the current situation, and to look for new solutions to optimize wave energy use in Sweden.The study uses a qualitative method applied through literature studies and structured interviews with actors in the energy and wave power sector. The results show that wave energy has promising potential in certain Swedish coastal areas as a complementary energy source. However, its development is hindered by technical challenges, high investment costs, limited commercialization, and insufficient knowledge sharing between key stakeholders.Together, these factors form substantial barriersto large-scale implementation. The study therefore highlights the need for stronger collaboration between stakeholders and authorities in various contexts to improve coordination and support the effective utilization of wave energy in Sweden
