Adopting the Future - Early Perceptions of AI-enhanced Smart Glasses : A Qualitative Exploration of Consumer Expectations and Adoption Barriers

The rapid advancement of smart wearable technologies, particularly AI-enhanced smart glasses, represents a significant shift in how users interact with technology. This study explores how potential early adopters perceive these technologies, focusing on the drivers and barriers influencing their acceptance and adoption. Utilizing a qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and focus groups with engineering students and professionals from a global telecommunications company. The study identifies four core themes shaping consumer expectations: privacy concerns, data vulnerability, behavioral shifts, and user preferences. Participants expressed both excitement about the innovative potential of AI integration and concern over issues such as data misuse, bystander privacy, and over-reliance on AI. Despite these concerns, many viewed the camera and AI functionalities as essential to the usefulness of the device. The findings highlight that trust in technology and responsible data practices are pivotal in mitigating perceived risks. This study contributes to the understanding of technology diffusion and offers practical insights for designers and marketers seeking to navigate the path from early adoption to mainstream acceptance.
