Sammanfattning

This thesis investigates the possibility of recycling dismantled acoustic panels by covering them with different textile materials or increasing the thickness by placing two panels on top of each other, with the aim of increasing the possibilities of recycling by improving their sound absorption ability and appearance.Three reusing options were tested; one being 40 mm sound absorbers that were covered in wool fabric and the other with the same thickness covered in a thin sheet, while the third solution was doubling of 15 mm panels. The measurements of absorption coefficients and reverberation time were carried out in a scaled-down reverberation room with regard to ISO 354:2003. The results showed that all tested options improved sound absorption, where the wool textile gave the greatest improvement followed by the sheet. The doubling of 15 mm sound absorbers gave lower results than covering absorbers with textiles, which shows that the surface layer and structure of the material play an important role in the sound absorption ability of the ceiling absorbers. Despite methodological limitations, such as background noise, insufficient sound level and lack of ISO-standardized test conditions, this study clearly shows that reusing acoustic panels with textiles is a possible and effective alternative to new production and throwing them in a landfill. The study contributes with practically applicable knowledge and shows potential for further development in reusing materials and sustainability.
