Sammanfattning

Background Substance abuse is a chronic and relapsing disease and the background to the abuse depends on several factors. There is a stigmatized approach to these patients which leads to consequences for the health and medical services such as poorer quality of care but also for the individual in the form of shame and isolation. Aim The purpose of this literature study is to examine nurses´ experiences of caring för patients with substance use disorders in somatic care. Method The thesis follows a structured literature study with elements of the methodology used in systematic reviews. Results Nurses' experiences of meeting patients with addictive disorders in somatic care vary. Difficulties in the care encounter are linked to previous experiences, attitudes and organizational conditions. Some results show a stigmatizing approach, while others have mixed feelings of uncertainty but also understanding of the patient's situation. Conclusions There are challenges for nurses in meeting patients with addictive disorders that are partly based on stigmatization, while the results show that experiences vary, which highlights a need for continued research and reflection on the meeting with the patient group within somatic care.
