This study uses a qualitative, comparative method to analyze two literary works and their easy-reading adaptations, Kvinnor och äppelträd by Moa Martinson and Stöld by Ann-Helén Laestadius, from the Swedish National Agency for Education’s reading list for upper secondary school. Through combining a theory of adaptation and the analytical framework of intersectionality this study aims to make visible and compare themes and motifs between the works to discuss the didactic implications and suitability of utilizing easy-reading adaptations in education. Our results show that the chosen easy-reading adaptations reflect the original work’s themes and motifs to such an extent that they can be utilized in education. However, in situations where the easy-reading adaptation wholesale replaces or is used in conjunction with the original work further materials may be necessary to complement the adaptation and achieve similar complexity as the original works.
