Special operations and raids against strategically significant targets have become increasingly important in modern warfare, particularly as a means of enabling conventional forces to achieve operational breakthroughs. This development underscores the need for research on the conditions under which such operations succeed. However, contemporary special operations are often subject to high levels of classification, limiting empirical accessibility and making historical case studies especially valuable. This study examines the success of Operation Prelim, a raid conducted by the SAS against an Argentine airfield on Pebble Island during the Falklands War. The objective of the operation was to destroy attack aircraft that posed a significant threat to the planned British amphibious landing at San Carlos. The study is conducted as a qualitative single case study, using William H. McRaven’s theory of special operations as an analytical framework. The purpose is to identify the mechanisms that led to tactical success against a numerically superior enemy. The findings show that SAS successfully implemented five of the six principles, particularly in relation to simplicity, security, surprise, speed, and purpose. However, the operation deviated from the principle of rehearsal as no full-scale or mission specific rehearsal was conducted. The analysis suggests that this shortcoming was mitigated by high levels of individual skill, clear objectives, and simulated planning.
