Sammanfattning

Teaching social studies at upper secondary school often involves issues that may be perceived as controversial, such as politics, religion or equality. At the same time, the Swedish curriculum emphasizes the school's democratic mission and the importance of providing students with opportunities to express diverse viewpoints in a safe learning environment. Controversial issues can therefore both contribute to students' democratic competence and pose pedagogical and ethical challenges for teachers. The aim of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of how controversial issues can be integrated into social studies education and what opportunities and challenges this entails for teachers and students. The study is conducted as a qualitative literature review in which scientific articles, doctoral theses and research reports are analyzed. Data collection was carried out through systematic literature searches in relevant academic databases as well as through citation tracking. The results show that teaching controversial issues can strengthen students' critical thinking, democratic skills and understanding of multiple perspectives. At the same time, challenges emerge in relation to classroom climate, the teachers approach, and the risk of students feeling excluded. The study also highlights the importance of clear didactic frameworks and conscious pedagogical leadership in order to address controversial issues in a constructive manner.
