Sammanfattning

The essay focuses on how marginalization, hegemonic masculinity, and the living conditions in the suburbs are constructed in rap lyrics and how they portray lives in the suburb. The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the living conditions in the suburb and how Swedish rap artists reflect their lives in songs released between the years 2017-2024. The data used consists of 33 songs from 25 Swedish male rap artists. The essay employs a qualitative method, with the analysis method being textual analysis in the form of content analysis. The theoretical frameworks of this study are the marginalization of groups, living conditions and hegemonic masculinity. The essay's key findings reveal that masculinity and vulnerability are recurring themes and patterns in the analysis. These two themes have contributed to understanding how community has become a crucial focal point for rap artists in the suburb. Another prevalent theme is "Us and them," which arises between the suburb and the wider society, as well as between groups within the suburb.
