This essay examines the child's position in influential biblical commentaries on Jesus encounters with children in Matthew 19:13-15, Mark 10:13-16, and Luke 18:15-17. Using John Wall’s concept of childism as a critical hermeneutical framework, the study analyzes if, and in that case how, adult-centered assumptions shape interpretations of children in selected commentaries. Furthermore the essay develops a childist rereading that emphasizes children as relational agents and potential contributors to theological meaning-making. In addition to Wall the essay is drawing on scholars such as Ryan Stollar, Rebecca Nye, Karin Rubenson among others. The study aims to show why children should be viewed as full members of their community, not just recipients but participants, and how children’s presence and perspectives can function as important hermeneutical and theological resources for contemporary theology and church practice.
