This thesis aims to examine how graphic design can visualize and communicate intangible cultural heritage through the study of cookbooks. The study explores how visual strategies in text, photography and illustration construct narratives that position cooking as a cultural practice. Drawing on theories of representation, cultural production and design as storytelling, a qualitative narrative analysis is conducted on two highly borrowed cookbooks from Malmö city library. The findings show how language, imagery and structure function as signs that place the authors either as relatable peers or cultural representatives, thus shaping the readers’ understanding of food practices. The study concludes that cookbooks operate as cultural artefacts and that graphic design plays a central role in materializing and communicating culinary heritage.
