Sammanfattning

This qualitative study examines how traditional graphic techniques can function as methods in contemporary graphic design, and how working in a collective graphic workshop may affect the graphic design process. The study was conducted based on the collective graphic workshop KKV Grafik, in Malmö Sweden. Graphic design has over time become an increasingly digitalized, efficiency-driven and individualized practice, and in line with this change, analog printmaking and workshop-based work have also decreased in use and importance. Through semi-structured interviews, observations and a literature review, the study investigates how materiality, tactility and collective environments shape design work in contrast to digital, efficiency-driven practices. The theoretical framework includes materiality, tactility and tacit knowledge. The result shows that workshop-based methods in graphic design are slower, more physically demanding, and have significantly closer connection to tactility and materiality, as these play a major role in both process and result. Finally, the study suggests that workshop based practice can function as a complementary method in graphic design, offering tactile and reflective qualities difficult to achieve digitally.
