Beyond the Final Chapter : Exploring Fanfiction's Potential for Student Motivation and Learning

This study examines the potential use of fanfiction as a tool in the EFL classroom to increase student motivation, drawing on previous research to demonstrate how fanfiction can strengthen student engagement, aswell as an analysis to show how fanfiction can potenially enhance writing skills. A literary analysis was conducted on two popular fanfictions, After and The person I have become, to identify what writing skills can be developed through these texts. The analysis reveals that fanfiction has the potential to be used to work with writing skills such as character development, dialogue and the use of symbolism. This study demonstrates that incorporating fanfiction in English education in upper secondary school could potentially be used to not only improve student’s writing skills but also boost their motivation to learn and develop appropriate language skills. Overall, this study highlights the value of fanfiction as a tool in the EFL upper secondary classroom, offering an approach to enhance students’ motivation as well as enhancing their writing skills.
