ChatGPT: Today the world, tomorrow education? Understanding perceptions of ChatGPT among academic faculty and staff

This thesis investigates the perceptions of academic faculty and staff towards the use of ChatGPT within Swedish higher education institutions. With the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as the theoretical framework, this study explores the factors influencing the perceptions underlying acceptance and use of ChatGPT. Utilizing a quantitative approach with a survey methodology, data is collected from 75 participants across 24 institutions. Its findings reveal significant correlations between the perceived usefulness of ChatGPT and image, output quality, and result demonstrability, whereas perceived usefulness was determined to be a non-significant factor. Subjective norm and job relevance were also identified to have significant mediated effects through image. The study further concludes that these significant correlations are maintained both when measuring the perceived usefulness for faculty usage versus that of student usage of ChatGPT. The results are intended to contribute to the discourse on AI implementation in higher education as well as assist educational administrators and policymakers in making informed decisions when considering strategies for integrating AI tools in teaching and administrative processes.
