This study aimed to explore which model between Honesty-Humility and machiavellianism that best could explain emotional manipulation in social interactions. The method was a quantitative cross-sectional study with 163 participants who answered a survey that consisted of three self-report tests: HEXACO with 60 items, MACH-IV and Emotional Manipulation Scale (EMS). The result showed that both models had an association with EMS, however, in the linear regression analysis with both variables as predictors, only MACH-IV was statistically significant and the strongest predictor of EMS. The results showed that emotional manipulation is best understood as a social phenomenon, rather than an indicator of broader personality traits. This is relevant for future studies in personality and social psychology. The ambition of the study is to understand if emotional manipulation is explained by a broader personality dimension, or a strategic, self-interest behaviour in social interactions.
