Den mediala representationen av PRIDE : En kritisk diskursanalys av nyheter om Prideparaden 2025 i Stockholm och New York

Sammanfattning

This paper aims to research how Stockholm Pride was represented in Dagens Nyheter and how New York Pride was represented in The New York Times 2025 through a Critical Discourse Analysis. The research focuses on how the Pride parade was represented with perspectives on power, ideology and queer theory among other things. The media coverage about Pride contains more than only the monitoring of an event, it also includes questions regarding freedom, sexuality, gender and human rights. The research questions that the thesis answers are 1. How was Pride 2025 represented in text and pictures in Dagens Nyheter and The New York Times? 2. How does ideology emerge through text and picture in Dagens Nyheter and The New York Times during the media discourse of Pride 2025 in Stockholm and New York? and 3. Which similarities and differences can be identified in the representation of the Pride parade in Stockholm in Dagens Nyheter and New York in The New York Times? The theoretical framework is based on critical discourse theory and the application of queer theory within this. The thesis uses a qualitative method and analyses twelve articles and their pictures with a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The result of the analysis shows that the liberal ideology is dominant in both newspapers and values as tolerance, open-mindedness and freedom are highlighted as objective truths rather than political opinions. The largest difference between the representation of Pride in the newspapers is the national context where The New York Times illustrates a more polarized reality with direct resistance. In comparison with earlier research where a queer critical discourse analysis was applied this thesis found similar discursive themes within queer.
