Since 2000, the industrial sector has been experiencing what is often termed the FourthIndustrial Revolution, or Industry 4.0. This era has brought about the rise of smartfactories, where machines and devices are interconnected and communicate with thecloud. As edge computing in industrial IoT devices has grown, so too has the demandfor increased computing power. This thesis presents the design of a proof-of-conceptRaspberry Pi-based industrial gateway, aiming to demonstrate the potential of openplatform hardware in industrial applications.Throughout this thesis, a carrier PCB for the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 wasdeveloped, incorporating the necessary circuitry and connectors for high-speedinterfaces such as USB3 and gigabit Ethernet. The PCB also includes a board-to-boardconnector, enabling it to link with other gateways within the ecosystem, allowingremote unbricking and firmware updates. The design work was primarily conductedusing the EDA tool KiCad. The completed carrier PCB functioned as intended,predominantly utilizing industrial-grade components. All components received thecorrect voltages, and all interfaces worked as expected. The board is intended toevaluate the suitability of industrial components in a rugged environment and lays thefoundation for future development.
