Purpose: This degree project investigates how the residential building Skogsbrynet 1 in Hammarby, Västerås, can be renovated to improve its energy performance in accordance with current BBR requirements. Method: The study is based on a combination of a literature review, a case study, and dynamic energy simulations. The case study includes an examination of the building’s structural design, technical systems, energy performance, and thermographic identification of heat losses. Energy simulations were performed using IDA ICE to evaluate the impact of selected measures, including additional attic insulation and window replacement. Due to limited availability of documentation, standardized assumptions were applied, and the results should therefore be interpreted as indicative. The economic feasibility of the measures was assessed using the simple payback method. Results: The results indicate that additional attic insulation leads to a greater reduction in energy use compared to window replacement. The measure improved the building’s energy performance from 145 to 131 kWh/m²·year and resulted in an energy saving of approximately 0.09 kWh per invested Swedish krona. Conclusions: Additional attic insulation was identified as the most effective measure for improving the building’s energy performance. However, the reliability of the results is constrained by incomplete building data, the absence of calibration against measured energy use, and the use of standardized occupant behavior in IDA ICE simulations, which may not fully reflect actual operating conditions.
