Engelskläromedel för globala möten? : En innehållsanalys av kulturell representation och interkulturell kommunikativ kompetens i ett läromedel för gymnasiet

The global function of English is addressed in the frameworks World Englishes, which highlights global variations of English, and Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC), which consists of competences and dimensions needed for successful global communication. This study combines these two frameworks in a textbook analysis in order to gain a broad understanding of how cultural content is organized and treated in an English textbook in a Swedish context. A combined quantitative and qualitative approach is used to showcase the representation of cultures in an English textbook and the way in which the material can facilitate the development of intercultural communicative competence. The results show a bias towards countries and cultures where English is the primary language, e.g. the UK and the US. Furthermore, the possibility of developing ICC is shown to vary within the different dimensions as well as between different cultural contexts. Finally, the results are discussed in relation to previous research and didactic implications.
