Sammanfattning
This paper aims to investigate how Task-Based Learning (TBL) supports the development of sociolinguistic competence among Swedish upper secondary English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. The study employs a systematic literature review of empirical research on TBL in EFL contexts, with the selected studies analysed through thematic analysis. The findings reveal that through engagement in purposeful tasks that resemble real-world communication, learners are required to adapt their language to social roles, interlocutors, and situational demands, which directly fosters sociolinguistic awareness and pragmatic flexibility. Furthermore, TBL’s collaborative and low-anxiety learning environment reduces learners’ fear of making mistakes and encourages risk-taking, which contributes to increased confidence and more positive attitudes toward English use. The discussion situates these findings within the Swedish EFL context, highlighting the importance of task design, teacher preparedness, and institutional support for successful implementation. Although Swedish learners benefit from extensive incidental exposure to English, they lack structured opportunities for context-sensitive spoken interaction, an area in which TBL offers substantial pedagogical value. The review also highlights the importance of task design, explicit sociolinguistic guidance, appropriate assessment practices, and teacher preparedness for successful implementation of TBL. The paper concludes by proposing a classroom-based research project to further explore TBL’s impact on sociolinguistic competence in Swedish upper secondary schools, highlighting the need for context-specific evidence to inform future practice. By synthesising existing research, this study contributes to the field by underscoring TBL’s potential to enhance sociolinguistic competence, foster learner engagement, and guide future empirical research in Swedish EFL education.
