Sammanfattning

The purpose of this study is to present experiences and perceptions of the L1 subject in Swedish upper secondary education according to people who have incomplete or failed grades. We held five topical story-focused semi-structured interviews with young adults who in different ways had experiences of the L1 subject. Then we performed a reflexive thematic analysis in relation to our social reproduction approaches framework. We found that factors outside of the L1 subject often impacted their experiences of the subject itself. The stories highlighted social relations, well-being, meaningfulness, and affective responses to the subject. Details about the instruction, content and purpose of the subject are rarely described or even remembered. The participants often experienced the subject as highly individualised, alienating and meaningless. Many of them also experienced the subject as limiting their ways to be, feel and think. We conclude that awareness of the fact that one's own instruction and actions may not be perceived as intended or in just one way may be beneficial, and that this may be valuable to reflect upon when planning instruction. We also discuss the moral implications of our results for the L1 subject.
